In a community meeting held on Thursday last week, the Kopanong Local Municipality’s ward 08 under the leadership of Councillor Lehlohonolo May has resolved to distribute its land to its residents.
According to May, amongst others, the council resolved to focus on underserviced residential sites in towns like Edenburg. “Also we have decided that vacant sites in the township must be occupied, cemetery extensions will be complete, land will be worked for food security initiatives and land for commercial and property will be further development,” said May.
He added that members of the community felt very strong that the lease contract for the commonage farms must be reviewed and informal settlement established to establish the huge demand for land occupation. After Thursday’s meeting, the councillor further invited residents to engage in dialogue with his office on the matter.
“Residents are encouraged to research any other concept in how we can change and lift the face of our community
. The municipality is still committed to small town regeneration and willing to work with everybody to mobilize resources for the programme,” he said. According to May, there is a wide and broad space in the area, not in Edenburg only but in the entire Xhariep district towards the Karoo which he said needed a robust engagement with all stakeholders in the region and this can also assist in economic growth. “It cannot be disputed that land can be used for establishing more businesses which speaks directly to job creation,” he added.
