Macufe turns 20

The Mangaung Cultural Festival (Macufe) reached its 20th year milestone this year. Perfomances at the event will be headlined by African artists and for the first time in many years the line-up will include Western artists. According to the event’s marketing director, Sithembele Khala this year’s theme is ‘Celebrating 20 Years’.
“We have decided to celebrate our two decades of existence with fellow African artists, ” said Khala. He said afro-pop group Mafikizolo would stage several collaborations as they were also celebrating 20 years in the music industry. “They will be guests of honour on the day of the opening.” Khala said they decided to benchmark Macufe with other international events.
“We are getting to the point where we want African artists open the show, be the main performers and also close it,” he said. Khala added that their golden hour would be a collaboration with Mafikizolo  and Nigerian superstar Davido. He said the main aim is to let Macufe be known as a truly African festival. This year, the event kicks off on 29 September and ends on 8 October.
He added:  “The festival starts with tshepe-Sesotho hip hop on 29 September at The Dome, Old Grey College Sports Ground where super cool artists mostly from the Free State will share the stage. Amongst others include Frog, Castino, Thwemmy, Mc Tumi Fire, Tumi Tladi, Kot, Inferno, OkMalumkoolkat, Gemino Major and Nasty C, all are expected to participate.” Also included in the line-up will be a comedy festival, art exhibitions, indoor performances, the main festival and a soccer match between Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs.
