SA trio up for IAAF Awards

The 800m champion, Caster Semenya, long jumper, Luvo Manyonga and 400m world champion, Wayde van Niekerk have been shortlisted for the International Association of Athletes Federations (IAAF) World Athletes of the Year Awards.
Semenya, the 1 500m bronze medallist, is the only South African in the top 10 nominees in the Women’s category and will go against the likes of Kenya’s Hellen Obiri and Sandra Perkovic from Croatia.
She will also be looking to become the second recipient of the award, which was last won by high-jumper, Hestrie Cloete back in 2003.  Meanwhile, Manyonga and van Niekerk have also made the cut in the final 10 athletes for the Men’s award. The duo endured an impressive year, with van Niekerk retaining his 400m title in London and Manyonga setting a national record of 8.65m – the best jump this decade so far.  They have been nominated alongside the world best athletes including Sam Kendricks of the US and Jamaica’s Omar McLeod. Fans can vote on the IAAF’s social media platforms, with their poll counting.  Voting closes on 16 October and winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in Monaco on 24 November 2017.
