The Bloemfontein High Court handed down a thirteen year sentence to murder accused Godfrey Maphaboli on Wednesday. This came after a lengthy trial of Maphaboli after he allegedly murdered his wife, Thulani Gqamane in November 2015 and burnt her body with three tyres. NPA Spokeperson, Phaladi Shuping confirmed that Maphaboli was convicted of murder, however, he could not say why the conviction was not that of murder in first degree.
“The courts treat every matter according with its merits and we as the prosecuting authority work very hard to ensure that suspects get the highest sentence possible but remember, the defence is also given a chance to state its case,” said Shuping. He said they believed that the sentence would send a strong message to those contemplating to commit similar criminal activities.
Meanwhile, the Deputy President of the ANC Women’s League, Sisi Ntombela told Dumelang News that the sentence was an insult to women, especially in a month considered to be celebrating human rights. “The late Gqamane would have been an important element in the society, at this day and age we are short of strong women leaders who can take this country forward and sadly, we can’t fold our arms and watch our women die in the hands of people who claim to be loving them,” said Ntombela.
